ABOUT SENATOR LOWELL BARRON
It is a long way from the cotton fields of Sand Mountain to the halls of state government. Lowell Barron, who has served Northeast Alabama as the District 8 State Senator since 1982, began life hard on a farm near the DeKalb/Jackson County line. The lessons he learned growing up poor, with an absent father and a farm to keep going, prepared Barron for a life of hard work and service to the region that is his home.
Senator Barron took to Montgomery the work ethic and principles instilled in him as a young boy. For 27 years he has worked to improve the quality of life in DeKalb, Jackson and Madison counties, as well as throughout the state. Senator Barron has been a champion of infrastructure development, knowing that it is the key to a region's progress. He has secured millions of dollars in state funds to improve highways and bridges throughout his district, bring public drinking water to rural residents, and recruit new jobs to the state.
During his time in the Senate, Senator Barron has worked to provide a better education for Alabama's children, and access to better health care for senior citizens. He has also fought for laws that will protect children and families, fight illegal drugs, and keep Alabama's taxes low.
Senator Barron served as the Senate President Pro Tem for eight years. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, which sets the legislative agenda for the Senate.
